3. Recommended Reading/Listening

One of our new Library Books –
The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer : Lessons From the Healthiest Places on Earth by Dan Buettner.

The creator of National Geographic’s popular Blue Zones franchise brings readers a beautifully illustrated and informative guide to the Blue Zones―the places on Earth where people live the longest―including lessons learned, top longevity foods, and the “Power 9” behaviours to help you live to 100―plus a surprising new Blue Zone. National Geographic Explorer and best-selling author Dan Buettner has travelled the globe to uncover the best strategies for longevity, which he found in the Blue Zones: places around the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives. In The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer, Buettner returns to Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula; and Loma Linda, California to check in on the super-agers living in the blue zones and interprets the not-so-secret sauce of purpose, faith, community, down-time, natural movement, and plant-based eating that has powered as many as 10 additional years of healthy living in these regions. And Buettner reveals an all-new Blue Zone―the first man-made Blue Zone yet explored. Throughout his two decades of research, Buettner has worked with some of National Geographic’s top photographers―including David McLain and Gianluca Cola―to document the healthy habits of the world’s longest living communities. In this informative collection, their work punctuates Buettner’s lively text, offering a beautiful tour of the Blue Zones.

Warblr

The way in which it works is simple – make a recording with your smartphone, and Warblr will identify the species of bird/s that can be found in that recording, providing you with images and descriptions to help you learn more about our feathered friends.

In using Warblr, you will be contributing to a citizen science project, and hopefully one day helping to protect endangered species. We are making the recordings and the data collected on species identification freely available to be used for research and conservation. Listen to some of the recordings our users are sharing right now here.

Developed by The Wildlife Trusts, Warblr has these key features:

  • 300 UK bird species
  • Take or upload recordings to identify
  • View spectrograms
  • Build your birdwatching lifelist
  • Detailed bird profiles and facts
  • Available on iOS and Android
  • Free version with in-app purchases

Warblr is designed specifically for UK birds. While it doesn’t have auto ID capability, it has detailed bird profiles and is easy to use. The free version provides limited identifications.

As well as our bra recycling we also have a charity recycling collection box for a variety of different items – old cameras and equipment, stamps, mobile phones, jewellery and watches, game consoles and tablets. The donation box can be found by the front door of CKH.

Our bra recycling scheme takes your unwanted or unloved bras and through our network of bra banks raises vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research.

Together with our recycling partners, our textile recovery project prevents these bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life.

Successful ventures like this provide employment and an income for people living in the UK. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly.

For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund our research. With over 30 million women in the UK you could really help make a difference!
