Newsletter No.49 – September 2022

September has been a strange month with a new prime minster and then the rather sudden decline of our Queen and then the 12 days of mourning, seeing the nation celebrate her life in various different ways.

We also sadly lost one of our original ALCS members in Sue Puddicombe who attended the very first fundraising event in the summer of 2018 and has since been a part of what makes ALCS special.

She formed close friendships with other members and it has been a pleasure to know Sue with her pink hair and funny stories. Our thoughts are with David her husband and all the family.

I saw a post recently that made me think this is exactly why I volunteer and work for ALCS to help others and make connections.

“It’s important that we share our experiences with other people.
Your story will heal you and your story will heal someone else.
When you tell your story, you free yourself and give other people permission to acknowledge their own story.” Iyanla Vanzant.

I think this went well with Tim’s poem below he wrote about ALCS and what we offer do make sure you check it out below.

Recommended website – We Get It – Scars For Life

Celebrating the beautiful and the bold.

Exploring the physical and mental scars of cancer through photography and film.

For those of us who have scars from cancer – whether they are physical, mental or both – we tend not to show them or talk about them.

And yet, the scars represent visually what we have experienced, both mentally and physically. They are the scars that have enabled us to carry on living – they are our scars for life.

And this is why the Scars for Life project is so important to us; it is to show those scars and be proud of what our bodies have achieved.

We Get It has joined forces with award winning photographer Sophie Mayanne, with our We Get It photographer, Holly Webb and with James Stapleton from Jooka Video Production to create an all-immersive exhibition of photos and video illustrating our cancer stories and the scars they have left behind.
