Newsletter No.57 – May 2023

A warm welcome from myself (Donna) this month, I have just returned from a restful week in Zante. Something nice about turning off the laptop & TV and just relaxing. We went on a boat trip around the island and saw the head of a turtle and some dolphins. As a family we also enjoyed the pool, some cocktails and the local shops and beach. I even managed to read a whole book. It will not surprise those who know me and my love of sport that it was Ronnie O’Sullivan new book Unbreakable – I was lucky enough to pre-order a signed copy.

The charity have also been busy and whilst I was away Mary completed the new volunteer training with Rosemarie, Susan, Trina & Marina. We are very much looking forward to their input and support with the charity in variety different roles.

Please do check out the events coming up in June – Fermented Food, Pie and Pint & Blokes Brunch along with our weekly Acupuncture clinic which will be back each Monday. If you would like anymore information on any events or services please do contact myself or Mary.

8. Recommended Reading – Ronnie O’Sullivan Unbreakable.

As mentioned above, I read this book in 5 days whilst on holiday. Excellent read if you are into snooker, running or just curious about what he might really be like. He gives off a confident persona on the snooker table but he has had a tough upbringing and suffered with both depression/anxiety and actually lacks confidence in his own ability, he has been lucky to be able to work on himself and his game to find a balance in life.

One thing that surprised me was that he buys his clothes in M&S and drives a smart car which people do not expect when they do a double take at the traffic lights. He is also a big fan of scones, cream and Jam – its his daily routine when taking part in the world championship in Sheffield which he has participated in for the past 31 years.

Health and Nature Dorset (HAND) has received funding, from Natural England, to gather insights into the barriers people have in accessing nature for their wellbeing, with a focus on people with long term health needs.  We have developed a short survey to accompany some focus groups and art-based workshops that have been running over the last couple of months.

Connecting and engaging with natural spaces benefits physical and mental wellbeing, but not everyone has equal access to Dorset’s greenspaces.  HAND want to better understand how people are accessing, engaging and connecting with nature to support wellbeing and if there are any barriers that may stop you from engaging.

Sharing your (or those you support) experiences of connecting with nature or the barriers you face will help us to identify possible solutions to better support people to access and connect with nature for their health and wellbeing.  Contributions will be used anonymously to develop a report that will be shared with Natural England and partner organisations in Dorset. None of the information provided will be identifiable to individuals.

The survey should take about 8 minutes to complete – but the more you share the better, to help inform local solutions.  Please complete the survey by end 4 June 2023.
