Newsletter No.36 – August 2021
I have just put a jumper on to sit down and write this! It is such strange weather and one minute it seems a perfectly normal August day and the next, cold and wet. I am so grateful I am not camping this month.
Donna and I take it in turns to write the newsletter and when I look back on the last few weeks it has been such a busy time.
We were delighted with how the Open Day went and thankful for all those who took the time to be involved.
The summer flower arranging workshop was fun and it felt wonderful to be able to see people again and share a lot of laughter, tea and creativity.
More on both of those events below.
As we look towards the autumn I have decided to keep planting as who knows what weather we will get! I have harvested my onions, pickled some and plaited the others. I love this time of year when I get to restock my preserves cupboard.

Open Day
On Monday 26th July we held our first Open Day at Uplyme Village Hall. We wanted to showcase what we have been doing since we started 3 years ago and ask for feedback to help our plans going forward.
We were delighted to be able to welcome so many people through the doors and see some new faces as well friends . Thank-you to Emma from Jurassic Cottage Kitchen who provided us with nourishing, nurturing food.
We had a questionnaire, which was also available online and alongside the round table discussion in the afternoon we were able to get a lot of information. All this is being put together into a plan for our future. This will be presented to the Trustees at the AGM on 1st September (to which all are welcome)
Congratulations Katherine Bolton of Pebblemoon
One of our amazing therapists was nominated and won massage therapist of the year 2021/2022 for Devon.

Thank you – Nigel Ball Head Shave Event
Thank you to Nigel who in July shaved his head again to raise money and awareness for cancer and our charity. All money raised will go direct to supporting our clients and beach hut which is much appreciated. Money is still coming in but so far Nigel has raised £387.04. This is an amazing amount and will make a real difference.
ALCS 3rd Year Anniversary Day Trip – Sculptures by the Lakes
In October 2021 we are celebrating 3 years since our first drop in.
To celebrate this we are organising a trip to Sculpture by the Lakes near Dorchester. This is a truly magical place to explore, stunning gardens and inspirational sculptures.
With thanks to a very generous person for donating the funds to cover this event.
We will provide transport and pick ups in Axminster and Lyme Regis will be available.
Lunch and snacks will be provided but do let us know any dietary requirements by emailing support@axminsterandlymecancersupport.co.uk
First in-person workshop of 2021
Thank you to Ali from Busy Bee Floristry at Millers Farm Shop Kilmington for coming and showing some of us how to create a summer flower arrangement. It was so an afternoon spent creating some stunning displays. Many of the flowers were grown locally and Ali was able to teach us all to make an arrangement to take home and enjoy. We look forward to the autumn and Christmas workshops later in the year. For more information and how to book please see the future events tab.

A Friend by Gillian Jones
A person who will listen and not condemn
Someone on whom you can depend
They will not flee when bad times are here
Instead they will be there to lend an ear
They will think of ways to make you smile
So you can be happy for a while
When times are good and happy there after
They will be there to share the laughter
Do not forget your friends at all
For they pick you up when you fall
Do not expect to just take and hold
Give friendship back, it is pure gold.
